This online workshop will take the place of the classroom based CO-OP workshop scheduled for September 2020. The workshop runs over three half-days, with a follow up Consolidation day scheduled for March 2020.

About the workshop:

The CO-OP Approach

Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP)  is a performance-based treatment approach for children and adults who experience difficulties performing the skills they want or need to perform. CO-OP is a specifically tailored, active client-centred approach that engages the individual at the meta-cognitive level to solve performance problems. Focused on enabling success, the CO-OP Approach employs collaborative goal setting, dynamic performance analysis, cognitive strategy use, guided discovery, and enabling principles. These elements, all considered essential to the Approach, are situated within a structured intervention format, and with parent/significant other involvement.

Research with this approach has shown that people with a variety of diagnoses who experience difficulty learning or re-learning motor-based skills can experience success. Current theories of motor learning and motor performance emphasise the interaction between the person, the environment, and the task for successful performance of an activity.

The Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance Approach was developed to provide therapists with an evidence-based approach to enabling performance success in an effective and efficient way. CO-OP is not only supported by a broad research base but is also embedded in an evidence framework. Originally designed for children with Developmental Co-ordination Disorder, that is children with motor-based performance problems, it has demonstrated efficacy in helping children and adults with a variety of diagnoses acquire skills and experience success in performing everyday activities that are important to them.

The goal of the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance Approach is to enable individuals with performance difficulties, be they physical, cognitive, or other, to succeed in performing the everyday tasks and activities that are important to them. CO-OP uses a process of guided discovery to enable the identification of the specific strategies that will support performance success. In CO-OP individuals learn how to talk themselves through performance problems.

Course schedule

This comprehensive course is offered in two parts.

Part 1 will familiarise participants with the CO-OP approach including the key elements, background theory and practical application. Please note that this course is a ‘lifespan course’ and will cover using CO-OP for service users in many settings.

Part 2 is a follow up day, focused on consolidation. This compulsory day is scheduled a few months after the introductory course to allow participants to use CO-OP with their own clients in their own settings. Therapists will be asked to bring along footage of their use of the intervention approach and case scenarios to discuss their experience with the approach to review and consolidate their knowledge with the facilitators.
